Sacramental Preparation

BAPTISM

Baptisms are scheduled by calling the parish office. A Baptismal preparation class is conducted on one of the Mondays of each month. Parents and godparents are required to attend to discuss their responsibilities to the child being baptized. The rite of Baptism is also explained. Parish couples are welcome to help with this program. Please contact the Parish Office at 410-242-2292 to register for the class or to get more information.

FIRST RECONCILIATION

Children of Ascension Parish make their first reconciliation when they are in the second grade. Preparation for First Reconciliation is available to students in Ascension School and the Religious Education Program. The Archdiocese requires candidates for this sacrament to have one year's previous enrollment in a religious education program or a Catholic school, as well as in the current year. There are three mandatory meetings for parents. Mrs. Marie Murphy is the Director of Religious Education, and can answer any questions you have about preparation for this sacrament. For inquiries, call the parish center at 410-242-2292. Ascension Parish celebrates First Reconciliation in the winter.

FIRST EUCHARIST

Preparation for First Eucharist is available to students in Ascension School and the Religious Education Program. The Archdiocese requires candidates for this sacrament to have one year's previous enrollment in a religious education program or a Catholic school, as well as in the current year. There are three mandatory meetings for parents. Children receive the Eucharist for the first time normally when they are in the second grade unless their parents feel the child should wait until they are older. Mrs. Marie Murphy is the Director of Religious Education, and can answer any questions you have about preparation for this sacrament. For inquiries, call the parish center at 410-242-2292. Ascension Parish celebrates First Eucharist in late April.

CONFIRMATION

Those preparing for Confirmation must attend classes in the ninth grade and fall of the tenth grade. Preparation for Confirmation is separate from the regular religious education programs, and sessions are scheduled for parents and sponsors. The sacrament is administered by the visiting Bishop in October or November. For further information, call Mary Beth Barnes at 410-242-2292.

MATRIMONY

It is the goal of the marriage preparation program to assist engaged couples in discovering their strengths and differences in the critical areas of marriage. Married couples model and review essential elements for living out the call to Christian married life. The Church requires that engaged couples invest time in preparing for this sacrament. Couples may fulfill this obligation by attending several one-on-one sessions with a sponsor couple. A second option is an intensive one-day Pre-Cana program that is offered twice a year to engaged couples contemplating marriage. Both of these marriage preparation programs fulfill the Archdiocesan requirements for couples approaching the sacrament of Matrimony. Couples contemplating marriage should contact Deacon Tom Yannuzzi or Fr. John Williamson at least six months before they plan to get married.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK

A Mass of Anointing of the Sick is scheduled in the fall and spring each year. Seniors and those who have acute or chronic illnesses are invited to receive the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. Anyone who is seriously ill should receive the Sacrament. No special preparation is required. For further details, call the parish office at 410-242-2292.
